Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Webmin 1.370 and 1.390 and Usermin 1.300 and 1.320 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the search parameter to webmin_search.cgi (aka the search section), and possibly other components accessed through a "search box" or "open file box." NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.

The weakness was disclosed 02/11/2008 (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-0720 since 02/11/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108552 (Webmin 1.370 / 1.390 webmin_search.cgi Cross Site Scripting), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11887 (Webmin prior to 1.500 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (108552). The entries 696, 1756, 1755 and 2338 are pretty similar.
