wkcvqd01.dll in Microsoft Works 6 File Converter, as used in Office 2003 SP2, Works 8.0, and Works Suite 2005, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .wps file with crafted section length headers, aka "Microsoft Works File Converter Input Validation Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 02/12/2008. The weakness was shared 02/12/2008 by Damian Put (iDefense) with VeriSign (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0216 since 01/12/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33107 (MS08-011: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Works File Converter Could Allow Remote Code Execution (947081)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110071 (Microsoft Works File Converter Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS08-011)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5918.
