Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Media Services memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Media Services. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in nsum.exe in the Windows Media Unicast Service in Media Services for Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted packets associated with transport information, aka "Media Services Stack-based Buffer Overflow Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 04/13/2010 by Fabien Perigaud with CERT-LEXSI as MS10-025 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0478 since 02/02/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby and been published 4 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46017 (MS10-025: Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Media Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980858) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-025 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9675.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (57330) and Tenable (46017). See 4106, 4104, 4105 and 4102 for similar entries.
