Microsoft Windows SMB Client resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The SMB client in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 does not properly allocate memory for SMB responses, which allows remote SMB servers and man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) SMBv1 or (2) SMBv2 response, aka "SMB Client Memory Allocation Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 04/13/2010 by Laurent GaffiƩ with stratsec as MS10-020 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-0269 since 01/07/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by laurent gaffie and been published 4 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45507 (MS10-020: Vulnerabilities in SMB Client Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980232)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90592 (Microsoft SMB Client Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-020)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-020 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
