A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.4.1 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in an ActiveX control in QTPlugin.ocx for Apple QuickTime 7.4.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via long arguments to the (1) SetBgColor, (2) SetHREF, (3) SetMovieName, (4) SetTarget, and (5) SetMatrix methods.

The bug was discovered 02/12/2008. The weakness was released 02/14/2008 by Laurent Gaffie (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0778 since 02/13/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
