Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 XSS Filter cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The XSS Filter in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 does not properly perform neutering for the SCRIPT tag, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks against web sites that have no inherent XSS vulnerabilities, a different issue than CVE-2009-4074.

The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 04/26/2010 by Eduardo A. Vela Nava David Lindsay (SirDarckCat) as MSRC/ARC (Website). The advisory is shared at blogs.technet.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1489 since 04/20/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 776 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 902166 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100084 (Microsoft Internet Explorer XSS Filter "SCRIPT" Tag XSS Vulnerability (MS10-018)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MSRC/ARC is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at blogs.technet.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
