of the file zicc.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the zseticcspace function in zicc.c in Ghostscript 8.61 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a postscript (.ps) file containing a long Range array in a .seticcspace operator.
The weakness was published 02/28/2008 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-0411. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67660 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : ghostscript (ELSA-2008-0155)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40955), Exploit-DB (31309), Tenable (67660), SecurityFocus (BID 28017†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1019511†).
