WebKit in Apple Safari before 5.0 on Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.6 and Windows, Apple Safari before 4.1 on Mac OS X 10.4, and Google Chrome before 5.0.375.70 does not properly handle a transformation of a text node that has the IBM1147 character set, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted HTML document containing a BR element, related to a "type checking issue."
The weakness was presented 06/09/2010 by Masahiro Yamada (TippingPoint) with Google (Website). The advisory is available at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1770 since 05/06/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47751 (FreeBSD : webkit-gtk2 -- Multiple vulnerabilities (19419b3b-92bd-11df-b140-0015f2db7bde)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.2.3 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10148.
