The manipulation of the argument editor with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in Edit.jsp in JSPWiki 2.4.104 and 2.5.139 allows remote attackers to include and execute arbitrary local .jsp files, and obtain sensitive information, via a .. (dot dot) in the editor parameter.

The weakness was presented 03/10/2008 (Website). The advisory is available at marc.info. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1231 since 03/10/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
