This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-1002 since 02/26/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31604 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 3.1), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115753 (Apple Safari 3.1 Not Installed).
Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
