Microsoft Windows code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (version now known) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Windows Vista does not properly enforce the NoDriveTypeAutoRun registry value, which allows user-assisted remote attackers, and possibly physically proximate attackers, to execute arbitrary code by inserting a (1) CD-ROM device or (2) U3-enabled USB device containing a filesystem with an Autorun.inf file, and possibly other vectors related to (a) AutoRun and (b) AutoPlay actions.

The weakness was released 03/24/2008 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0951 since 02/24/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/05/2025). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90445 (Microsoft Windows Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-038)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41349), SecurityFocus (BID 28360†), Secunia (SA29458†), SecurityTracker (ID 1020446†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-17951†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-3777. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
