The Tracing Feature for Services in Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 has incorrect ACLs on its registry keys, which allows local users to gain privileges via vectors involving a named pipe and impersonation, aka "Tracing Registry Key ACL Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 08/10/2010 by Cesar Cerrudo with Argeniss as MS10-059 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2554 since 06/30/2010. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

A public exploit has been developed by Cesar Cerrudo and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48296 (MS10-059: Vulnerabilities in the Tracing Feature for Services Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (982799)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90628 (Microsoft Windows Tracing Feature for Services Privilege Elevation Vulnerability (MS10-059)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS10-059 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
