Apache-SSL 1.3.34 1.57 expandcert input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The ExpandCert function in Apache-SSL before apache_1.3.41+ssl_1.59 does not properly handle (1) / and (2) = characters in a Distinguished Name (DN) in a client certificate, which might allow remote attackers to bypass authentication via a crafted DN that triggers overwriting of environment variables.

The bug was discovered 04/02/2008. The weakness was presented 04/03/2008 by Alexander Klink with Cynops GmbH (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-0555 since 02/01/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31738 (Apache-SSL ExpandCert() Function Certificate Handling Arbitrary Environment Variables Manipulation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 1.3.34 1.57 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41618) and Tenable (31738).
