IBM Lotus Notes 6.5 kpagrdr.dll memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM Lotus Notes 6.5 (Groupware Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing in the library kpagrdr.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

kpagrdr.dll 2.0.0.2 and 10.3.0.0 in the Applix Presents reader in Autonomy (formerly Verity) KeyView, as used by IBM Lotus Notes, Symantec Mail Security, and activePDF DocConverter, does not properly parse long tokens, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via a crafted .ag file.

The bug was discovered 04/08/2008. The weakness was released 04/10/2008 by Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-5406 since 10/12/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68936 (Symantec Mail Security for SMTP Autonomy KeyView Module Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115778 (IBM Lotus Notes Multiple KeyView Parsing Vulnerabilities).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8800.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41722) and Tenable (68936). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 41905, 41904, 41903 and 41902.
