Heap-based buffer overflow in spin.c in libclamav in ClamAV 0.92.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PeSpin packed PE binary with a modified length value.
The weakness was presented 04/16/2008 by Damian Put (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0314. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32417 (GLSA-200805-19 : ClamAV: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165685 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update clamav (SUSE-SA:2008:024)).
