Apple QuickTime 7.x input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple QuickTime 7.x (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

QuickTime in Apple Mac OS X 10.6.x before 10.6.5 accesses uninitialized memory locations during processing of JP2 image data, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted JP2 file.

The weakness was published 11/11/2010 by Carsten Eiram (TippingPoint) with Verschiedene (siehe Apple Advisory) as HT4435 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3788 since 10/07/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51061 (QuickTime < 7.6.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117647 (Apple QuickTime Prior to 7.6.9 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2010-12-07-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10292.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51061), SecurityFocus (BID 44795†), OSVDB (69152†), Secunia (SA39259†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1024729†).
