Adobe Shockwave Player 11.x memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Adobe Shockwave Player 11.x (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

dirapi.dll in Adobe Shockwave Player before allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a Director file containing a crafted pamm chunk with an invalid (1) size and (2) number of sub-chunks, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-4084, CVE-2010-4085, CVE-2010-4086, and CVE-2010-4088.

The weakness was disclosed 10/22/2010 by Carsten Eiram with Verschiedene (siehe Adobe Advisory) (Website). The advisory is shared at adobe.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2581 since 07/01/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/18/2021).

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80174 (Adobe Shockwave Player <= (APSB10-25) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118635 (Adobe Shockwave Player rcsL Chunk Memory Corruption Vulnerability (APSA10-04, APSB10-25)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at adobe.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (80174). The entries 55297, 55296, 55295 and 55294 are pretty similar.
