Vulnerabilities in the SNMPv1 request handling of a large number of SNMP implementations allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service or gain privileges via (1) GetRequest, (2) GetNextRequest, and (3) SetRequest messages, as demonstrated by the PROTOS c06-SNMPv1 test suite. NOTE: It is highly likely that this candidate will be SPLIT into multiple candidates, one or more for each vendor. This and other SNMP-related candidates will be updated when more accurate information is available.

The bug was discovered . The weakness was disclosed 12/02/2003 by Bill Van Devender (Website). The advisory is available at cisco.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-0013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 78035 (Multiple Vendor SNMP Request and Trap Handling Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1417.
