VMware Server 2.0.0/2.0.1/2.0.2 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in VMware Server 2.0.0/2.0.1/2.0.2 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The frame decompression functionality in the VMnc media codec in VMware Movie Decoder before 6.5.5 build 328052 and 7.x before 7.1.2 build 301548, VMware Workstation 6.5.x before 6.5.5 build 328052 and 7.x before 7.1.2 build 301548 on Windows, VMware Player 2.5.x before 2.5.5 build 246459 and 3.x before 3.1.2 build 301548 on Windows, and VMware Server 2.x on Windows does not properly validate an unspecified size field, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via a crafted video file.

The weakness was published 12/03/2010 by Aaron Portnoy (TippingPoint) with VMware (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-4294 since 11/18/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51057 (VMware Products Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2010-0018)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118876 (VMware ESX Command Injection Vulnerability (VMSA-2010-0018)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.vmware.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
