A vulnerability was found in Peercast 0.1218 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function http::getauthuserpass
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the HTTP::getAuthUserPass function (core/common/http.cpp) in Peercast 0.1218 and gnome-peercast allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a Basic Authentication string with a long (1) username or (2) password.
The bug was discovered 04/29/2008. The weakness was published 04/30/2008 by Nico Golde (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2040 since 04/30/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33557 (GLSA-200807-11 : PeerCast: Buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42092) and Tenable (33557).
