The SuiteLink Service (aka slssvc.exe) in WonderWare SuiteLink before 2.0 Patch 01, as used in WonderWare InTouch 8.0, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and service shutdown) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a large length value in a Registration packet to TCP port 5413, which causes a memory allocation failure.
The bug was discovered 05/05/2008. The weakness was published 05/06/2008 by CORE Security (Basti) with CORE Security Technologies as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2005 since 04/28/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 8.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6186.
