Microsoft Windows WMI Object code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version). This affects an unknown code block of the component WMI Administrative Tools WMI Object Viewer ActiveX. The manipulation as part of a WMI Object leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The WBEMSingleView.ocx ActiveX control 1.50.1131.0 in Microsoft WMI Administrative Tools 1.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted argument to the ReleaseContext method, a different vector than CVE-2010-3973, possibly an untrusted pointer dereference.

The weakness was presented 12/22/2010 with WooYun (Website). The advisory is shared at wooyun.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4588 since 12/22/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at wooyun.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11034.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (64250). See 55850 for similar entry.
