Linux Foundation Xen 3.0/3.0.2/3.0.3/3.0.4/3.1.2 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen 3.0/3.0.2/3.0.3/3.0.4/3.1.2 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the backend of XenSource Xen Para Virtualized Frame Buffer (PVFB) 3.0 through 3.1.2 allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted description of a shared framebuffer.

The bug was discovered 05/13/2008. The weakness was released 05/14/2008 as Bug 443078 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-1943 since 04/24/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79449 (OracleVM 2.1 : xen (OVMSA-2008-2007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117309 (CentOS Security Update for xen (CESA-2008:0194)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42387) and Tenable (79449). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 39488, 39434, 41301 and 42377.
