axengine.exe in Symantec Altiris Deployment Solution 6.8.x and 6.9.x before 6.9.176 generates credentials with a fixed salt or without any salt, which makes it easier for remote attackers to guess encrypted domain credentials.

The bug was discovered 05/14/2008. The weakness was released 05/18/2008 by Brett Moore with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at symantec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2291 since 05/18/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1552.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading to version 6.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5936.
