Integer overflow in the rtl_allocateMemory function in sal/rtl/source/alloc_global.c in OpenOffice.org (OOo) 2.0 through 2.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 06/10/2008. The weakness was released 06/10/2008 by iDefense Labs with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-2152 since 05/12/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67710 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : openoffice.org (ELSA-2008-0538)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117292 (CentOS Security Update for OpenOffice.org (CESA-2008:0538)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
