IBM DB2 9.1/9.5/9.7 Administration Server receiveDASMessage memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in IBM DB2 9.1/9.5/9.7 (Database Software). Affected is the function receiveDASMessage of the component Administration Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the DB2 Administration Server (DAS) component in IBM DB2 9.1 before FP10, 9.5 before FP7, and 9.7 before FP3 on Linux, UNIX, and Windows allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 01/28/2011 with ZDI (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0731 since 02/01/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51841 (IBM DB2 9.5 < Fix Pack 7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-01.ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11283. The filter is assigned to the category Vulnerabilities.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51841), SecurityFocus (BID 46052†), OSVDB (70683†), Secunia (SA43059†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29554†). See VDB-57307 for similar entry.
