The open_log function in log.c in Exim 4.72 and earlier does not check the return value from (1) setuid or (2) setgid system calls, which allows local users to append log data to arbitrary files via a symlink attack.
The weakness was published 01/31/2011 with Exim Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.exim.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0017 since 12/07/2010. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at exim.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
