win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 does not properly validate user-mode input, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Improper User Input Validation Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 02/08/2011 by Tarjei Mandt with Norman as MS11-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0086 since 12/21/2010. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51912 (MS11-012: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2479628)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90682 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS11-012)).
Applying the patch MS11-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
