Microsoft Windows 7/Server 2008 Kerberos improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Kerberos in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 does not prevent a session from changing from strong encryption to DES encryption, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof network traffic and obtain sensitive information via a DES downgrade, aka "Kerberos Spoofing Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 02/08/2011 by Scott Stender with iSEC Partners as MS11-013 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0091 since 12/21/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51913 (MS11-013: Vulnerabilities in Kerberos Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2496930)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90686 (Microsoft Windows Kerberos Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS11-013)).

Applying the patch MS11-013 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10807.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64901) and Tenable (51913). Similar entry is available at 4293.
