F-Prot scanning engine up to 4.3.1 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The scanning engine before 4.4.4 in F-Prot Antivirus before 6.0.9.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (engine crash) via a CHM file with a large nb_dir value that triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The bug was discovered 07/16/2008. The weakness was presented 07/21/2008 by Sergio Alvarez (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3244 since 07/21/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33549 (F-PROT Antivirus Engine < 4.4.4 Multiple File Handling DoS Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 4.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43835) and Tenable (33549). See 43317 for similar entry.
