Microsoft Windows DNS LLMNR Query input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block of the component DNS. The manipulation as part of a LLMNR Query leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

DNSAPI.dll in the DNS client in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly process DNS queries, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted LLMNR broadcast query or (2) a crafted application, aka "DNS Query Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 04/12/2011 by Neel Mehta with Google Inc. as MS11-030 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0657 since 01/28/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53387 (MS11-030: Vulnerability in DNS Resolution Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2509553)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
