Python up to 2.5.2 pyos_vsnprintf numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Python (Programming Language Software). This affects the function pyos_vsnprintf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple integer overflows in the PyOS_vsnprintf function in Python/mysnprintf.c in Python 2.5.2 and earlier allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or have unspecified other impact via crafted input to string formatting operations. NOTE: the handling of certain integer values is also affected by related integer underflows and an off-by-one error.

The bug was discovered 07/31/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/01/2008 by David Remahl with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-3144 since 07/10/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43771 (CentOS 5 : python (CESA-2009:1176)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155849 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Python (ELSA-2009-1178)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44173) and Tenable (43771). The entries 42064, 43496, 43495 and 43493 are pretty similar.
