A vulnerability was found in SonicWALL SSL-VPN VirtualOffice up to 4.0 (Firewall Software). It has been declared as problematic. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was shared 06/19/2011 by Marc Ruef with scip AG as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is available at vuldb.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Marc Ruef in URL/HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at vuldb.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sonicwall.com.Proper firewalling of tcp/80, tcp/443 is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
