A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in gnu gnutls up to 2.4.0 (Network Encryption Software). This affects the function _gnutls_handshake_hash_buffers_clear
in the library lib/gnutls_handshake.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Use-after-free vulnerability in the _gnutls_handshake_hash_buffers_clear function in lib/gnutls_handshake.c in libgnutls in GnuTLS 2.3.5 through 2.4.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via TLS transmission of data that is improperly used when the peer calls gnutls_handshake within a normal session, leading to attempted access to a deallocated libgcrypt handle.
The bug was discovered 06/30/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/08/2008 by Tomas Mraz (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at article.gmane.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-2377 since 05/21/2008. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 39 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34019 (FreeBSD : gnutls -- 'gnutls_handshake()' Denial of Service (d864a0a7-6f27-11dd-acfe-00104b9e1a4a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44486) and Tenable (34019). The entry 44979 is pretty similar.
