VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 before Update 2 and 2.0.2 before Update 5 relies on client-side "enabled/disabled functionality" for access control, which allows remote attackers to determine valid user names by enabling functionality in the GUI and then making an "attempt to assign permissions to other system users."
The weakness was shared 08/13/2008 by Brett Moore with Insomnia Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3514 since 08/07/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 2.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
