VMware Workstation/Player/ACE/Server input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in VMware Workstation, Player, ACE and Server (Virtualization Software) (the affected version is unknown). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

hcmon.sys in VMware Workstation 6.5.1 and earlier, VMware Player 2.5.1 and earlier, VMware ACE 2.5.1 and earlier, and VMware Server 1.0.x before 1.0.9 build 156507 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 build 156745 uses the METHOD_NEITHER communication method for IOCTLs, which allows local users to cause a denial of service via a crafted IOCTL request.

The weakness was presented 08/21/2008 by Laurent Gaffie (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-3761. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36117 (VMware Products Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2009-0005/VMSA-2009-0007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116348 (VMware Hosted Products, VI Client and Patches for ESX (VMSA-2009-0005 )).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44539) and Tenable (36117). See 3902, 3957, 45954 and 48370 for similar entries.
