A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007/Xp (Office Suite Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality in the library gdiplus.dll. gdiplus.dll in GDI+ in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP1, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, Server 2008, Office XP SP3, Office 2003 SP2 and SP3, 2007 Microsoft Office System Gold and SP1, Visio 2002 SP2, PowerPoint Viewer 2003, Works 8, Digital Image Suite 2006, SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services SP2, SQL Server 2005 SP2, Report Viewer 2005 SP1 and 2008, and Forefront Client Security 1.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed GIF image file containing many extension markers for graphic control extensions and subsequent unknown labels, aka "GDI+ GIF Parsing Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 09/09/2008. The weakness was published 09/10/2008 by Peter Winter-Smith with Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3013 since 07/07/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34120 (MS08-052: Vulnerabilities in GDI+ Could Allow Remote Code Execution (954593)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90454 (Microsoft Windows GDI+ Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-052)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6358.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44727) and Tenable (34120). Similar entries are available at 3822, 3819, 3818 and 3821.
