The bug was discovered 09/09/2008. The weakness was released 09/10/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-3014 since 07/07/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34120 (MS08-052: Vulnerabilities in GDI+ Could Allow Remote Code Execution (954593)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90454 (Microsoft Windows GDI+ Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-052)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6361.
