Microsoft Windows resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

srv.sys in the Server service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, and Server 2008 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via an SMB WRITE_ANDX packet with an offset that is inconsistent with the packet size, related to "insufficiently validating the buffer size," as demonstrated by a request to the \PIPE\lsarpc named pipe, aka "SMB Validation Denial of Service Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 09/16/2008. The weakness was shared 09/16/2008 by Ruben Santamarta (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-4114 since 09/16/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35361 (MS09-001: Vulnerabilities in SMB Could Allow Remote Code Execution (958687)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90477 (Microsoft SMB Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-001)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6662.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47676), Tenable (35361) and Exploit-DB (6463). The entries 45905 and 45904 are related to this item.
