A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007 (Office Suite Software). Untrusted search path vulnerability in Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP2 allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .doc, .ppt, or .xls file, aka "Office Component Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was disclosed 09/13/2011 by Parvez Anwar David Warren with CERT/CC (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1980 since 05/09/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 03/19/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1574.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2857 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56176 (MS11-073: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2587634)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110157 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-073)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-073 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10880.
