The IPSEC livetest tool in Openswan 2.4.12 and earlier, and 2.6.x through 2.6.16, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files and execute arbitrary code via a symlink attack on the (1) ipseclive.conn and (2) ipsec.olts.remote.log temporary files. NOTE: in many distributions and the upstream version, this tool has been disabled.
The bug was discovered 08/24/2008. The weakness was published 09/24/2008 by nofame (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-4190 since 09/23/2008. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. A public exploit has been developed by nofame in Shell File and been published 11 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 31 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67835 (Oracle Linux 5 : openswan (ELSA-2009-0402)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155964 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Openswan (ELSA-2009-0402)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
