MPlayer up to 1.0 Rc2 Real Demuxer demux_real.c stream_read numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in MPlayer (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function stream_read of the file demux_real.c of the component Real Demuxer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple integer underflows in the Real demuxer (demux_real.c) in MPlayer 1.0_rc2 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (process termination) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted video file that causes the stream_read function to read or write arbitrary memory.

The bug was discovered 09/29/2008. The weakness was presented 09/29/2008 by Felipe Andres Manzano as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at ocert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3827 since 08/27/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34327 (FreeBSD : mplayer -- multiple integer overflows (724e6f93-8f2a-11dd-821f-001cc0377035)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8899.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45510) and Tenable (34327).
