Mozilla Bugzilla up to 3.1.4 importxml.pl path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Bugzilla (Bug Tracking Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file importxml.pl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in importxml.pl in Bugzilla before 2.22.5, and 3.x before 3.0.5, when --attach_path is enabled, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via an XML file with a .. (dot dot) in the data element.

The bug was discovered 08/12/2008. The weakness was released 10/03/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-4437 since 10/03/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in XML. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33904 (FreeBSD : Bugzilla -- Directory Traversal in importxml.pl (1d96305d-6ae6-11dd-91d5-000c29d47fd7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116301 (Fedora Update for Bugzilla (FEDORA-2009-2418,FEDORA-2009-2417)).

Upgrading to version 2.22.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44407) and Tenable (33904). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 46388, 46387, 46386 and 46385.
