Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 SP2; Office 2008 for Mac; Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats SP2; and PowerPoint Viewer 2007 SP2 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via an invalid OfficeArt record in a PowerPoint document, aka "OfficeArt Shape RCE Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 12/13/2011 with ZDI (Website). The advisory is available at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-3413 since 09/09/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110169 (Microsoft PowerPoint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-094)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-094 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11931. The filter is assigned to the category Vulnerabilities.
