Multiple integer overflows in dhost.exe in Novell eDirectory 8.8 before 8.8.3, and 8.73 before 8.7.3.10 ftf1, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) Content-Length header in a SOAP request or (2) Netware Core Protocol opcode 0x0F message, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 10/01/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2008 with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at support.novell.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4478 since 10/07/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 8.7.3.8 Presp9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3710.
