The hfsplus_block_allocate function in fs/hfsplus/bitmap.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.28-rc1 does not check a certain return value from the read_mapping_page function before calling kmap, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a crafted hfsplus filesystem image.

The bug was discovered 10/15/2008. The weakness was shared 11/05/2008 by Eric Sesterhenn (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-4934 since 11/05/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
