Mozilla Firefox up to 7.0.1 SVG accessKey Event information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 7.0.1 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component SVG accessKey Event Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 8.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 8.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.6 allow remote attackers to capture keystrokes entered on a web page, even when JavaScript is disabled, by using SVG animation accessKey events within that web page.

The weakness was released 12/20/2011 by Mario Heiderich as MFSA2011-56 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3663 since 09/23/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57355 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (e3ff776b-2ba6-11e1-93c6-0011856a6e37)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165277 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (openSUSE-SU-2012:0039-2)).

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71911), Tenable (57355), SecurityFocus (BID 51136†), OSVDB (77954†) and Secunia (SA47302†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4495, VDB-4494, VDB-4493 and VDB-4498.
