Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 8.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 8.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.6 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via an Ogg VIDEO element that is not properly handled after scaling.

The weakness was presented 12/20/2011 as MFSA2011-58 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-3665 since 09/23/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57355 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (e3ff776b-2ba6-11e1-93c6-0011856a6e37)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165277 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (openSUSE-SU-2012:0039-2)).

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
