Mozilla Firefox 3.0/3.0.1/3.0.2/3.0.3 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 3.0/3.0.1/3.0.2/3.0.3 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.4 assigns chrome privileges to a file: URI when it is accessed in the same tab from a chrome or privileged about: page, which makes it easier for user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript with chrome privileges via malicious code in a file that has already been saved on the local system.

The bug was discovered 11/12/2008. The weakness was published 11/13/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5015 since 11/10/2008. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43715 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox (CESA-2008:0978)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119094 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2008:0978)).

Upgrading to version 3.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6618.
