The bug was discovered 11/13/2008. The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2008 by Nitesh Dhanjani with Microsoft (Website). The advisory is shared at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-4216 since 09/24/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116046 (Apple Safari Prior to 3.2.0 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2008-11-13)).
Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
